Architectural vs 3 Tab Shingles — Which for Your BC Home?

These are the two ends of the asphalt shingle world. 3 tab is the flat, economical original. Architectural, also called laminate or dimensional, is the thicker, layered shingle that dominates new roofs today. Here is the honest comparison and why we recommend what we do. Asphalt shingles are still the most common roof on Lower Mainland homes, and within asphalt there are really two families. 3 tab shingles are the original: a single flat layer with cut outs that create three tabs, giving a uniform, slightly flat appearance. Architectural shingles, also called laminate or dimensional, are built from two bonded layers, which gives them depth, a heavier feel, a better wind rating, and a longer life. For most homeowners today the practical question is not whether to use asphalt, but which of these two to use.

3 tab: the economical original

3 tab shingles are the most affordable asphalt option and they install quickly. They give a clean, uniform, flat look that some homeowners prefer on simpler rooflines. The trade offs are real, though. Being a single layer, they are lighter, carry lower wind ratings, and have shorter expected lifespans than architectural shingles. In our wet, sometimes windy climate, the gap in durability matters. We still install 3 tab where a homeowner specifically wants it or where budget is the deciding factor, but it is no longer the default choice for a long term roof.

Architectural: the modern standard

Architectural shingles are the modern standard, and for good reason. The two bonded layers give a dimensional, textured look that reads as a higher quality roof, often mimicking the depth of wood shake or slate from the street. They are heavier, hold up better to wind, and carry longer manufacturer warranties. Premium architectural lines from CertainTeed, IKO, and Malarkey perform very well in our conditions. The IKO Dynasty, for example, is a Canadian made architectural shingle with a strong impact rating and a high wind rating when nailed correctly. For most homeowners replacing a roof they intend to keep, architectural is the recommendation.

Side by side comparison

Factor 3 Tab Architectural / Laminate
Construction Single flat layer Two bonded layers

Wind rating Lower Higher
Expected lifespan Shorter Longer
Weight Lighter Heavier, more robust
Warranty Shorter limited Longer limited
Curb appeal Basic Strong, mimics shake or slate

Which one is right for you

Long term roof on your home
Architectural, every time. Better wind performance, longer life, and far more curb appeal for a moderate cost step up.
Tight budget or short hold
3 tab can make sense if budget is the deciding factor or you are selling soon, with eyes open to the shorter life.
Storm and wind exposure
Architectural handles our wind and weather better, which matters in exposed and higher elevation areas.
Resale and appearance
Architectural reads as a quality roof from the street and supports resale value far better than flat 3 tab.

Our honest recommendation for almost every homeowner replacing a roof they plan to keep is a quality architectural shingle. The cost step up over 3 tab is moderate, and you get a meaningfully better roof in look, wind performance, and lifespan. We install every shingle roof with a four nail pattern as our standard, on a half inch plywood deck with proper underlayment and flashing details. We are CertainTeed and IKO Master Roofer certified and install premium architectural lines. See our asphalt shingle and 3 tab shingle pages for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost over 3 tab?

For a roof you plan to keep, almost always yes. The cost step up is moderate, and architectural shingles give you a better wind rating, a longer expected life, longer warranties, and far more curb appeal. 3 tab still makes sense if budget is the single deciding factor or you are selling soon, but it is no longer our default for a long term roof.

How much longer do architectural shingles last?

Architectural shingles are built from two bonded layers, which makes them heavier and more durable than single layer 3 tab, so they carry longer expected lifespans and longer manufacturer warranties. Real world life always depends on installation quality, ventilation, and our climate, but the architectural shingle has a clear durability edge by design.

Do architectural shingles handle BC wind and storms better?

Yes. The heavier, layered construction gives architectural shingles higher wind ratings than 3 tab, which matters in exposed neighbourhoods and at higher elevations where our winter storms hit harder. Correct nailing is essential to achieving the rated wind performance, which is why we use a consistent four nail pattern on every shingle job.

Can I tell which type I currently have?

Usually yes. 3 tab shingles look flat and uniform with regular straight lines and visible cut outs creating three equal tabs. Architectural shingles look thicker and more textured, with a varied, dimensional pattern and no uniform tab lines. If you are unsure, we can identify it during a free roof assessment.

What brands of architectural shingle do you install?

We are CertainTeed and IKO Master Roofer certified and install premium architectural lines from the major manufacturers. The IKO Dynasty, for example, is a Canadian made architectural shingle with a strong impact rating and a high wind rating when nailed correctly. We match the product to your home, budget, and the look you want.

How do you install your shingle roofs?

Every shingle roof we install uses a four nail pattern as our standard, over a half inch plywood deck with proper underlayment, ice and water protection where needed, and carefully detailed flashings. Installation quality is what determines how long any shingle lasts, which is why we use our own in house crew on every job.
